About Us
Ananya Education and Empowerment Trust
We work to protect the rights and provide opportunities to enhance the quality of life of migrant children in Bangalore slums. Children of migrant families often drop out of school and live in impoverished conditions that endanger their health and well-being. We work in partnership with the government and community to help provide better nutrition, education and protection to migrant children who are especially susceptible to harm and missed development opportunities.
Our project area covers over 1750 children.
History
Ananya Education and Empowerment Trust was started on 26th February 2016 by Managing Trustee/Director, Y. Mariswamy who was the Former Chairperson of the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, N K Patil Member of Justice High Court Committee on Child Malnutrition, and former member of Karnataka State Child Labour Eradication Project Society of Labour Department. Mariswamy is also a State and National Awardee for Protecting and Promoting Child Rights and Social Work.
Background
Most migrant families belong to Dalit communities and are found doing menial jobs like rag-picking, construction work, coolie or domestic work, selling small items in the streets and traffic signals or even begging when they have no work. Without proper living facilities, they do not have access to cooking food and are found sleeping on pavements and such. They have no access to proper water supply or drinking water and sanitation. Living in congested rooms or near dumping yards and frequent eviction makes their conditions extremely harmful to women and children. They lack safety and are subject to constant abuse and exploitation with no means of safeguarding their rights. Education is a far cry for most of these children. This way migrant children lose out on opportunities and get left behind by the system and get trapped in a vicious cycle of abuse and harm.
Our Mission
Ananya's mission is to protect the cultural, educational, economic, and social rights of children from impoverished migrant communities. We achieve this by seizing opportunities and resources through collaboration with the State, local government, civil society, and the general public.
Our Vision
We envision that every migrant child is educated and cared for and is empowered to seize opportunities that can help them grow holistically.
Our Work
Since our inception, we have been working to improve the well-being of children in Bangalore's urban slums. We work with high-risk migrant communities found in Basalingappa Slum, Dhobi Garden, Kodanarama Slum, Janakiram Layout, KHB Quarters and Vinobanagar.

Our Programmes
Digital Center
The Digital Centre supported by CRY provides a digital learning environment to government and government-aided school and pre-university college students, where multiple disciplines are taught with the help of several multimedia educational aids.
Teachers act as facilitators and explain concepts and facts and provide teaching aids like Next Education Interactive Flat Panel, YouTube videos, the KSEEB Website, etc. E-learning and Video learning through Teach Next Interactive Flat Panel (IFP) make the teaching-learning process both interesting and interactive and help develop the skills, knowledge and creativity of the students.
From October 2021 to March 2022, the total strength of the students from Class II to Class XII was 102. Students come from six slums of migrant communities.
Children’s Activity Centres
We run four Children’s Activity Centres in Janakiram layout, Kacharakanahalli, Vinobanagar and Kodandara slum. Our centres are open to children from the age 6 and 18 years. Here children come after school hours for tuition and extra coaching. Each child is given individual attention and support to cope with their lessons.
We have a total of 180 children in these centres. Over the two and a half years of operation, we have seen how 95% of our students fare above average in their school classrooms. Our students have grown in confidence and are active participants in any school or community program.
Child-led Collectives
We have formed six Child Collective Groups across the communities we cover, that meet every Saturday. Our community organizers build a rapport with the Child Collective Groups (CCG) and ensure a safe environment where children feel safe and encouraged to talk about whatever is on their minds. In addition, children are also educated about their rights, life skills, better communication and taught about the importance of education.
Similarly, we have formed Adolescent Collective Girls (ACG) aimed at supporting teenage girls into adulthood. The ACG meetings discuss issues such as rights, health, education, and child marriage. Cultural programmes are also organized to celebrate diverse backgrounds.
Early Education
We identify children aged 3-8 years who are not enrolled with the local Anganwadi Centres (AWCs) and help prepare them to join formal pre-schools like AWCs and also to help children from AWCs to smoothly transition to primary schools. We also work with voluntary groups that can help support early education by giving them time for tuition and play.
Anganwadi Centres face several problems of maintenance and management. We try to bridge the gap and ensure these centres can run effectively and become a strong pillar for the early education of migrant communities.
We conduct pre and post-assessments of children attending Anganwadi centres to monitor progress and impact closely.
Enrolment & Monitoring
We closely monitor and track the enrollment and continued participation of children aged 6-14 years, in schools using a Management Information System (MIS). This helps us to regularly meet with the concerned family to offer guidance and support to enroll in schools.
We were able to identify 111 out-of-school children. Identifying specific challenges requires us to meet with their respective school administrations to understand their needs and potential for re-enrolment. Our community organizers accompany school teachers in conducting home visits to help motivate parents and children to enroll.
Malnourishment Program
Malnourishment is very common among migrant children. They are also highly susceptible to various chronic illnesses due to their poor environmental conditions. We work with Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) to ensure that migrant children receive supplementary nutrition.
We work in partnership with ASHA and ANMS workers to improve the health and hygiene practices of young mothers and improve their understanding of child development from the time of conception. This also includes running immunization camps for communities. We also ensure pregnant and lactating mothers are provided with the necessary nutritional supplements to aid their health and ensure proper child development.
We conduct home visits to especially vulnerable families and follow up on their health and nutritional needs on a case-to-case basis where required.
Supporting Working Mothers
At the community level, we regularly organize parents' and mothers' meetings to educate them about various important topics. These meetings cover a wide range of subjects such as Health, Nutrition, the Importance of Education, the Pros and Cons of Mobiles and Social Media, Online Sexual Exploitation, and Skill Development.
In addition, we are working towards establishing a self-support system called ‘Mahila Sangha’ specifically designed to assist working women. This system will focus on helping women with their savings and providing them with access to loans. The idea is to create a supportive community where women can come together, share their experiences, and support each other in achieving financial independence.
Community Awareness
We run community awareness programmes to educate families about the importance of health and hygiene and education of their children and to understand the problems they face that act as barriers to growth and development. We also educate the larger community about the plight of migrants so they may participate in activities that can help the protection of their rights and build opportunities for development.
Research and Advocacy
We continuously conduct on-the-ground research to ensure we address the urgent needs of the children in these urban slums. This research is vital to inform programmes and policies that are being shaped to address the needs of vulnerable children. We also advocate for the development of better Anganwadi/ pre-school centres, primary and secondary schools and colleges in urban deprived communities that can address the needs of vulnerable children.
We collaborate with government stakeholders like AWC supervisors, CDPOs, WCD department to advocate and strengthen the policy implementation and monitoring process for child-friendly AWCs.
